Duration of Appointment: Initially for Five years, with a provision for renewal.

Compensation: A salary that is commensurate with market and the experience of the right candidate.

The National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) is seeking to hire highly skilled and motivated economist for its Centre on Gender and Macroeconomy. The candidate would work as part of a fast-growing gender and macro team at NCAER and will conduct policy-relevant in-depth research in areas at the intersection of gender with macroeconomics, financial sector, digital economy, entrepreneurship, and leadership. The jobs provides an opportunity to play a leadership role by working closely with international experts and agencies partnering with NCAER for its gender-related work.

Under the leadership of Ratna Sahay, the former Senior Advisor on Gender at the International Monetary Fund, NCAER is aiming to build a Centre of Excellence for the Economic Empowerment of Women in India. Three streams of work are planned: Research and Policy, Leadership Training, and Advocacy.

It is expected that the candidate will:

  • Provide operational leadership/or support in strengthening the Centre.. Supervise and engage in the execution of a portfolio of research projects/grants including developing research proposals, appropriate research methods, data collection methods, timely delivery of research outputs, and technical advice to NCAER’s sponsors;
  • Deliver agreed research outputs to sponsors on a timely basis consistent with NCAER’s quality norms, publishing in peer-reviewed journals, and preparing accessible policy briefs for policymakers;
  • Advance the conceptualization, design and building of methodology and gender-disaggregated data collection for gender, finance, macroeconomics, and digitalization to facilitate economic policy analysis at NCAER;
  • Maintain a strong research and publication pipeline and contribute to high-quality content for disseminating NCAER’s research in the areas of interest;
  • Contribute to research, dissemination, and capacity building workshops. Contribute to senior faculty’s interaction on gender issues with policymakers at state and central government levels independently, and/or as part of teams. Contribute to development of required documentation (Concept Notes, Terms of Reference, etc.) for advancing research work;
  • Foster collaboration among economists and policymakers to strengthen NCAER’s reputation and influence and identify opportunities for attracting research grants; and,
  • Mentor junior colleagues and research associates;

Qualifications, demonstrated experience and skills

  • PhD in economics and/or advanced professional degrees in social sciences such as Public Policy with at least 15-20 years of professional experience.
  • Excellent general skills in economic analysis with expertise in the areas at the intersection of gender, finance, macroeconomics, and digitalization.
  • Excellent writing, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, a flexible and cooperative attitude, and the ability to work effectively with people at all levels. Ability to work both independently and in teams.
  • Superior time/project management skills are essential.
