Abhinav

Abhinav Tyagi is working as a Research Associate.  His primary research interests include monetary policy, central banking, and fiscal policy analysis at national and sub-national level. He completed his Masters in Economics from Ashoka University and graduated in Economics from Hansraj College, Delhi University.

 
Sudipto Banerjee

Sudipto Banerjee is a Consultant at NCAER, in the Investor Education and Protection Fund (IEPF) Chair Unit on Regulation and Programme of Economic and Regulatory Research. His research interests are in regulatory governance, state capacity building, audit regulations, financial laws, corporate governance, and data privacy. 

Previously, Sudipto was associated with the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy. As a public policy researcher, he has worked in the areas like telecom policy, improving liability framework of the audit firms in India, disinvestment of centrally owned PSUs and consumer protection in the financial sector. Prior to his public policy career, Sudipto has worked at law firms in the field of corporate advisory, mergers, acquisitions and direct taxation. 

Sudipto holds a degree in law from the Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi and completed his post-graduate studies in law from the Indian Law Institute. He is also a member of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India. 

 
 
Bornali Bhandari

Bornali Bhandari is a Senior Fellow at NCAER with a background in international economics and macroeconomics, specifically focusing on the impact of globalisation on development. Currently she is engaged in analysing and assessing the progress and prospects of implementing Direct Benefit Transfers in states and Union Territories. Her wider research interests include analysis of skilling from a 3-E perspective (education, employability and employment), infrastructure, particularly the roads and ICT sectors, G-20 issues like climate change financing and reserve currency, FDI and trade-related issues. She also oversees the production of NCAER’s macro publications, the Quarterly Review of the Economy, and Quarterly Business Expectations Survey. 

 

Bornali received her PhD in Economics from the University of Oregon, Eugene, USA.

 
 
Shashanka Bhide

Dr Shashanka Bhide is a Senior Advisor, Research Programmes, at NCAER. He was associated with NCAER from 1982 to 2014 in different capacities. After leaving NCAER in July 2014, he took up the position of Director, Madras Institute of Development Studies, Chennai until his retirement in December 2018. His research has covered a number of areas in agriculture, macroeconomic modelling, infrastructure and poverty analysis. He has published extensively, including co-authoring and editing books and journal articles in these fields. Shashanka currently also serves as a member of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of RBI and Board of Governors of the Institute for Social and Economic Change in Bangalore.

 
Mythili Bhusnurmath

Ms. Mythili Bhusnurmath is a Senior Advisor at NCAER. Previously, worked at NCAER as a Senior Consultant from July 2013 to July 2017.  She  is an economist-turned-banker-turned journalist. After working for almost 16 years with the State Bank of India and the Reserve Bank of India, Ms Bhusnurmath moved to journalism in 1993. She edited the editorial page of The Economic Times for a number of years before joining The Financial Express in 2004 to become the first woman editor of a business daily in India. In 2006 she moved to The Economic Times (ET) as Consulting Editor and  subsequently (in 2013) to ET Now. She writes a regular monthly column for the editorial page of The Economic Times and anchors television shows on the economy on ET Now. She also served as consultant to the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council under the UPA government. She holds a Masters in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics, a degree in law from Delhi University and is a Certified Associate of the Indian Institute of Bankers.

 
D B Gupta

D B Gupta is currently a Senior Adviser at NCAER. He was associated with the Institute of Economic Growth (IEG), New Delhi; National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP), New Delhi; the World Bank; and the Government of India as an adviser to the Planning Commission and Department of Family Welfare. He has held several honorary chairs and visiting faculty positions to institutes in India and abroad. His primary areas of interest include health economics, environmental economics, urban development, housing, Indian industry and developmental economics. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Birmingham, England.

 
Poonam Gupta

Poonam Gupta is the Director General of NCAER and a member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM). Before joining NCAER, she was Lead Economist, Global Macro and Market Research, International Finance Corporation (IFC); and Lead Economist for India at the World Bank. Her prior appointments include the Reserve Bank of India Chair Professor at National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP); Professor at Indian Council for Research on International Economics Relations (ICRIER); Associate Professor, Department of Economics, Delhi School of Economics; and, Economist at the International Monetary Fund. Her research has been published in leading scholarly journals and featured in The Economist, Financial Times, and Wall Street Journal.  She holds a PhD in International Economics from the University of Maryland, USA and a Masters in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi.

 
Indira Iyer

Indira Iyer is a macro-fiscal and development economist with cross-organisational experience in the government, international development banks and research institutions.   Prior to this, Indira was the Chief Director of Research at the Tax Policy Research Unit (TPRU) in the Ministry of Finance, Government of India. At TPRU, she provided policy inputs to the government on direct and indirect taxation, including GST, trade and customs agreements and WTO deliberations, as well as served on various national and international committees on e-commerce and taxation. Indira had earlier worked at NCAER as a Senior Fellow between September 2014 and June 2016 on issues related to development policy and economic growth and investment.  She has also consulted for the World Bank and the International Finance Corporation as a specialist on tax policy and administration, fiscal decentralization, public expenditure management, and national poverty alleviation strategies.  Indira is a former member of the Indian Revenue Service and worked as a Joint Commissioner of Income Tax for over eight years and as the Central government’s legal representative on tax related disputes at the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal.

 
Charu Jain

Charu Jain is an Associate Fellow at NCAER. Prior to this she had worked at TNS India Ltd and PHD Chamber, New Delhi. Her areas of research interest include gender and educational studies, socio-economic issues, consumer studies and developmental changes. She has worked in the area of large scale consumer studies; industrial surveys; housing studies; agriculture, steel & handloom sector; and macro-economic policy issues. Her current research focuses on looking at land related policy issues in India. Dr Jain has few national and international publications to her credit.  She received her PhD in Economics from IGNOU, New Delhi and is Gold medallist during her Master’s program from GJUST, Hisar. She has recently authored a book on the ‘Quality of Secondary Education’ in India published by Springer.

 
Rajesh Kumar Jaiswal

Rajesh Kumar Jaiswal, Fellow at NCAER. He has been the Principal Investigator for an evaluation study of MGNREGA by the Planning Commission. His expertise is survey-based research in the social sector with strong skills in qualitative research methods.
