Honorary Senior Adviser

Praveen Kumar is Honorary Senior Adviser at NCAER. He has more than 30 years of experience in economic policy work. He retired from The World Bank in 2022 after 23 years of work as an economist at senior levels. His work has covered the areas of economic growth, fiscal policy, fiscal management, trade, labor markets, and industrial economics. At the World Bank, he led: preparation of many economic and sectoral technical reports; design, development and implementation of analytical work programs at country level; and high-level policy dialog with policymakers in countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, Middle East, Europe and Central Asia, South Asia, and Latin America. He also contributed to corporate-level Bank-wide reviews of flagship economic reports of the World Bank, including the newly introduced Country Climate Development Reports.

Prior to joining the World Bank, Praveen Kumar worked in the Indian Administrative Service for about ten years. He was awarded President’s gold medal for first place in the 1983 Civil Services Exam.

He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Maryland, College Park. His thesis work was awarded India EXIM Bank’s International Economic Research Annual Award in 2002. His other academic degrees are B. Tech (Mechanical Engineering) and M. Tech. (Systems and Management) from IIT Delhi.
