Indira Iyer is a macro-fiscal and development economist with cross-organisational experience in the government, international development banks and research institutions. Prior to this, Indira was the Chief Director of Research at the Tax Policy Research Unit (TPRU) in the Ministry of Finance, Government of India. At TPRU, she provided policy inputs to the government on direct and indirect taxation, including GST, trade and customs agreements and WTO deliberations, as well as served on various national and international committees on e-commerce and taxation. Indira had earlier worked at NCAER as a Senior Fellow between September 2014 and June 2016 on issues related to development policy and economic growth and investment. She has also consulted for the World Bank and the International Finance Corporation as a specialist on tax policy and administration, fiscal decentralization, public expenditure management, and national poverty alleviation strategies. Indira is a former member of the Indian Revenue Service and worked as a Joint Commissioner of Income Tax for over eight years and as the Central government’s legal representative on tax related disputes at the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal.
