India Economy Focus

	Overview Get an overview of the Indian economy in the recent quarters.

	Forecast Growth growth at 8.1 per cent, which is higher than 7.5 per cent attained in 2004-05. FY 2005-06 has bee the third consecutive year with 7.5 per cent.

	Agriculture Foodgrain production during 2005-06 is expected to increase by about 2.3 per cent, to 209.3 million tonnes.

	Industry IIP-General grew by 8.0 per cent during April-February 2005-06. Manufacturing grew by 9.0 per cent during April-February 2005-06.

	Services Service sector has maintained steady growth since 1996-97, except in 2000-01. The trade, hotels, transport and communcations.

	Money and Capital Markets There is no policy direction on merger or privatisaion of public sector banks. The CRR in March 2006 was at five per cent as compared to 4.5 per cent in March 2004.

	External Sector Global growth expectations for 2006 and 2007 remain close to the 2005 performance. India's exports in 2005-06.

	Prices The overall inflation rate stands at 4.1 per cent at the end of March 2006. The increase in the year-on-year inflation rate was mainly on account of rise in energy products.

	Public Finance The Economic Survey presented in Parliament on February 27, 2006, a day before the presentation of the Union Budget 2006-07.
