The NCAER 2019-20 Mid-Year Review of the Indian Economy

NCAER presented the 2019-20 Mid-Year Review of the Indian Economy on November 16, 2019 in cooperation with the India International Centre (IIC). NCAER macro team led by NCAER Distinguished Fellow Sudipto Mundle presented its latest analysis of the economic situation and its growth forecasts to an audience of policy makers, policy commentators, and the business media.

     
How to leverage open government, research, and data to strengthen public policymaking in India
November 7, 2019
Around 100 participants from a diverse group of researchers, policymakers, civil society, representatives of international organizations and corporate sector attended this seminar co-hosted by NCAER and 3ie. The event was held in the new Conference Centre at NCAER offering world-class facilities. Participants working on development economics, impact evaluation and for the government as well as technology sector discussed on a variety of topics on how to leverage open government, data and research to strengthen public policymaking in India.

  
Quality of Care and the Bypassing of Primary Health Centers in India-Implications for Ayushman Bharat

NCAER hosted a seminar on “Quality of Care and the Bypassing of Primary Health Centers in India—Implications for Ayushman Bharat” with Krishna Dipankar Rao, Johns Hopkins University. Shailender Swaminathan, Principal Economist, Leveraging Evidence for Access and Development (LEAD), KREA University, was the discussant. The seminar was attended by members of the NCAER Research Team, and invited guests from various eminent institutions including, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Integrated Research and Action for Development, Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, International Food Policy Research Institute, and IDinsight.

  
Workshop on Tourism Satellite Accounts for India and Indian States & Union Territories
September 6, 2019
NCAER has recently completed a seminal study on Tourism Satellite Accounts for 2015-16 for India and Indian States and UTs for the Union Ministry of Tourism. In this context, a one-day workshop was organised to launch NCAER’s Tourism Satellite Account (TSA) and to study and discuss its findings. The workshop commenced with a welcome address by Dr Shekhar Shah. Shri Yogendra Tripathi, Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, delivered the keynote address.

  
NCAER, Brookings India, and Business Standard pay tribute to their former colleague, Subir Gokarn (1959-2019)

It is with deep sadness that many of Subir Gokarn’s friends and former colleagues heard about his tragic passing away in Washington DC on July 30th after a brief illness: Dr Gokarn was just 59. Since November 2015, Subir Gokarn had been the IMF Executive Director for India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Bhutan. More than that, he was a professional and personal friend to many in India and overseas, known for his wry, keen sense of humour.

  
State of the Economy Seminar July 2019

NCAER presented its Quarterly Review of the Economy, covering the performance of the Indian Economy in the first quarter of 2019-20 and forecast for the year ahead at this seminar held at NCAER. Organized as an integral part of the Quarterly Review, this seminar brought together policymakers, industry leaders and researchers for a discussion. Bornali Bhandari and Sudipto Mundle, NCAER, presented the analysis and key findings of the report. Devendra Pant from India Ratings and Research and Subhomoy Bhattacharya, Business Standard were invited as discussants. The seminar also hosted a presentation on Fintech: Prospects, Challenges and Opportunities by Mitul Thapliyal, Partner, MicroSave Consulting.

     
The Union Budget 2019-20: Reforms and Development Perspectives

This joint seminar brought together the Executive Directors of five institutions, namely, the Centre for Policy Research (CPR), Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER), India Development Foundation (IDF), National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), and National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP) to present their more reflective assessment of the Union Budget 2019-20. NCAER was represented by its Director-General, Dr Shekhar Shah. The discussion and the Q&A with the audience was moderated by Puja Mehra, an Independent Economist.

     
The India Policy Forum 2019

NCAER, held the 16th India Policy Forum at the NCAER India Centre in New Delhi on July 8-10, 2019. The keynote speech on the morning of July 9th was delivered by Dr Krishnamurthy Subramanian, Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India. Using data from the Economic Survey 2019 released by the Government of India recently, Dr Subramanian provided a detailed roadmap of the Government’s economic agenda going forward.

The seminar was attended by NCAER research team and invited guests from institutions across the city.


NCAER signs MoU with the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation for Improving India's National Statistical System

NCAER signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) in New Delhi today to use new data technologies, knowledge generation and knowledge sharing, and capacity building in the field of official statistics. The MoU was signed by Dr Anil Kumar Sharma, NCAER Secretary and Operations Director and Shri Ajay Kumar Mehta, Deputy Director General MoSPI, in the presence of Dr Shekhar Shah, Director-General, NCAER, Shri Pravin Srivastava, Secretary, MoSPI cum Chief Statistician of India, Shri Jyotirmoy Poddar, Director General, Central Statistics Office, and other senior officers of MoSPI.

Skilling India: No Time to Lose

NCAER released a new Report, Skilling India: No Time to Lose, at an event inaugurated by Dr K P Krishnan, Secretary, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. The Report puts forward the key findings of a research project on skills and jobs that NCAER started in 2016 with support from a research grant from J.P. Morgan. The event was held in NCAER’s new T2 Conference Centre.

     
Release of NCAER-State Investment Potential Index: The 2018 N-SIPI

NCAER released the State Investment Potential Index (N-SIPI 2018) at a workshop inaugurated by Ramesh Abhishek, Secretary, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP). Covering 20 States and Delhi, this is the third edition of the annual N-SIPI released by NCAER that ranks states’ on their competitiveness in business and their investment climate.

     
The Impact of Groundwater Accessibility on the Performance of Firms

NCAER invited Dr Sheetal Sekhri, Department of Economics, University of Virginia, USA for a seminar on “The Impact of Groundwater Accessibility on the Performance of Firms” on July 17, 2018. This seminar was attended by NCAER research faculty and invited guests. The presentation by Dr Sekhri was based on her joint work with Jiahua Liu. In their study, the authors evaluated the impact of groundwater accessibility on the performance of firms.

NCAER’s 15th India Policy Forum was held in New Delhi on July 10-11, 2018. Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Suresh Prabhu delivered the keynote remarks at the opening of Conference. This year IPF hosted a special event featuring a conversation with Dr Arvind Subramanian, Chief Economic Adviser. IPF 2018 brought together a distinguished gathering of researchers, policymakers, politicians, industry participants and the media.

Book Launch: Digital Revolutions in Public Finance

NCAER and the International Monetary Fund released a seminal, new IMF book Digital Revolutions in Public Finance, on the reshaping of public finance by digitalization, at the Imperial Hotel, New Delhi. The launch of the book was followed by a panel discussion moderated by Shekhar Shah and a keynote address by Shri Amitabh Kant, CEO, NITI Aayog.

India Development Update - India's Growth Story

NCAER invited Dr Poonam Gupta, Lead Economist, World Bank for an exclusive presentation of the 2018 India Development Update—India’s Growth Story. The India Development Update is a biannual flagship publication of the World Bank which takes stock of the Indian economy. Dr Gupta discussed the current, March 2018 issue, titled “India’s Growth Story” which describes the state of the Indian economy, shares India’s growth experience and trajectory over the past several decades and provides a long-term perspective on India’s growth outlook.

Dr Bhalla is Senior India Analyst for the Observatory Group, Chairman of Oxus Research & Investments and a member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council and of NCAER’s Governing Body.
