The India Policy Forum 2019

NCAER, held the 16th India Policy Forum at the NCAER India Centre in New Delhi on July 8-10, 2019. The keynote speech on the morning of July 9th was delivered by Dr Krishnamurthy Subramanian, Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India. Using data from the Economic Survey 2019 released by the Government of India recently, Dr Subramanian provided a detailed roadmap of the Government’s economic agenda going forward.

NCAER hosted a seminar on “Whither US federal climate policy in the age of Trump, Pelosi, and defiant US states?” with Nathaniel Keohane, Environmental Defense Fund. Shreekant Gupta, Professor, Delhi School of Economics, and Coordinating Lead Author, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (5th Assessment report), was the discussant . The seminar was attended by NCAER research team and invited guests from institutions across the city.


NCAER signs MoU with the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation for Improving India's National Statistical System

NCAER signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) in New Delhi today to use new data technologies, knowledge generation and knowledge sharing, and capacity building in the field of official statistics. The MoU was signed by Dr Anil Kumar Sharma, NCAER Secretary and Operations Director and Shri Ajay Kumar Mehta, Deputy Director General MoSPI, in the presence of Dr Shekhar Shah, Director-General, NCAER, Shri Pravin Srivastava, Secretary, MoSPI cum Chief Statistician of India, Shri Jyotirmoy Poddar, Director General, Central Statistics Office, and other senior officers of MoSPI.

NCAER invited Jean Pisani-Ferry, Senior Fellow, Bruegel, for a seminar on “The Challenges of International Collective Action in a Changed Environment” on January 8, 2019. Harsha Vardhana Singh, Chairman, IKDHVAJ Advisers, and former Deputy Director-General at WTO, was the discussant at the seminar, which was organised in partnership with GDN, the Global Development Network.

Skilling India: No Time to Lose
October 30, 2018
NCAER released a new Report, Skilling India: No Time to Lose, at an event inaugurated by Dr K P Krishnan, Secretary, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. The Report puts forward the key findings of a research project on skills and jobs that NCAER started in 2016 with support from a research grant from J.P. Morgan. The event was held in NCAER’s new T2 Conference Centre.

     
Release of NCAER-State Investment Potential Index: The 2018 N-SIPI

NCAER released the State Investment Potential Index (N-SIPI 2018) at a workshop inaugurated by Ramesh Abhishek, Secretary, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP). Covering 20 States and Delhi, this is the third edition of the annual N-SIPI released by NCAER that ranks states’ on their competitiveness in business and their investment climate.

     
The Impact of Groundwater Accessibility on the Performance of Firms

NCAER invited Dr Sheetal Sekhri, Department of Economics, University of Virginia, USA for a seminar on “The Impact of Groundwater Accessibility on the Performance of Firms” on July 17, 2018. This seminar was attended by NCAER research faculty and invited guests. The presentation by Dr Sekhri was based on her joint work with Jiahua Liu. In their study, the authors evaluated the impact of groundwater accessibility on the performance of firms.

NCAER’s 15th India Policy Forum was held in New Delhi on July 10-11, 2018. Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Suresh Prabhu delivered the keynote remarks at the opening of Conference. This year IPF hosted a special event featuring a conversation with Dr Arvind Subramanian, Chief Economic Adviser. IPF 2018 brought together a distinguished gathering of researchers, policymakers, politicians, industry participants and the media.

World Development Report 2018: Learning to Realize Education's Promise - Presentation at NCAER

2018 WDR on Learning to Realize Education’s Promise was presented by its co-directors, Deon Filmer and Halsey Rogers, and WDR team member & senior economist Tara Beteille at NCAER. The presentations were followed by a lively and rich exchange and Q&A with NCAER staff. They also talked about how the findings of the WDR 2018 resonated closely with the Skilling India: No time to lose report that NCAER is about to release.

     
Book Launch: Digital Revolutions in Public Finance

NCAER and the International Monetary Fund released a seminal, new IMF book Digital Revolutions in Public Finance, on the reshaping of public finance by digitalization, at the Imperial Hotel, New Delhi. The launch of the book was followed by a panel discussion moderated by Shekhar Shah and a keynote address by Shri Amitabh Kant, CEO, NITI Aayog.

     
"Kathopakathan" Conversation about Women's Economic Empowerment

The NCAER-National Data Innovation Centre (NDIC) and Institute for Financial Management Research-India Initiative for What Works (IFMR-IIWW) jointly organised an initiative called Kathopakathan (conversation) on Women’s Economic Empowerment.The discussions at the Kathopakathan event are part of a series of activities to be undertaken by NCAER-NDIC for building research capacity, and promoting innovation and excellence in data collection in the country.

India Development Update - India's Growth Story

NCAER invited Dr Poonam Gupta, Lead Economist, World Bank for an exclusive presentation of the 2018 India Development Update—India’s Growth Story. The India Development Update is a biannual flagship publication of the World Bank which takes stock of the Indian economy. Dr Gupta discussed the current, March 2018 issue, titled “India’s Growth Story” which describes the state of the Indian economy, shares India’s growth experience and trajectory over the past several decades and provides a long-term perspective on India’s growth outlook.

NCAER Seminar PRIndex: A Global Indicator of Citizen's Perceptions of Property Rights

NCAER organized a seminar on “PRIndex”, a global indicator of citizens’ perceptions of the security of property rights, with Malcolm Childress, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Land Alliance, Inc., and David Spievack, Lead Research Architect for PRIndex, also at Land Alliance. PRIndex aims to fill the information gap about individual perceptions of property rights by creating a baseline global dataset to support the achievement of secure property rights around the world. Deepak Sanan, Senior Advisor, NCAER was the discussant for the seminar. The seminar was attended by NCAER research team and invited guests from institutiosn across the city.

A brainstorming session on ‘Methodologies for Collection of Time Use Data’, organised by NCAER’s newly set up National Data Innovation Centre (NDIC), was held at NCAER, New Delhi, on January 12, 2018. Apart from Shekhar Shah, Director-General, NCAER, and Sonalde Desai, Senior Fellow, NCAER and Director of NCAER’s newly set up National Data Innovation Centre (NDIC), the session was attended by pioneers and researchers in the collection of time use data in India, including Rakesh Maurya, Director, CSO, MoSPI; Devaki Jain, eminent writer and feminist economist; Ashwini Deshpande, Delhi School of Economics; J.P. Bhattacharjee and Sachin Kumar, NSSO; Shambhavi Srivastava, IFMR Lead; and Ellina Samantroy, V.V. Giri National Labour Institute.

Enhancing the Impact of Government Efforts to Modernize India's Land Records

A three-institution study of the modernization of land records in three Indian States was released at an event held at the India International Centre, today. The study recommends a number of reforms that could help to improve property records and services, enhance the impact of computerizing land records, and potentially reduce land related litigation in India.
